SPOILER-FREE Reviews For Star Wars: The Force Awakens Are In — Have The Critics Joined The Dark Side?!

We can't wait another parsec! Wait, that's distance, isn't it…
We're less than two days away from the most anticipated movie of all time, which means the critics are busy pushing out their reviews on the latest Star Wars movie!
As you may have heard, Star Wars: The Force Awakens already set the world record for advance ticketsthanks to the $100 million it made in pre-purchase sales… but box office numbers don't always translate to critical acclaim.
So… what did the industry's top critics think of the J.J. Abrams epic??
We rounded up the words of some of the biggest reviewers. Get a taste (below)!
Justin Chang, Variety: "Marvelous as it is to catch up with Han Solo, Leia, and the rest of the gang, fan service takes priority here over a somewhat thin, derivative story that, despite the presence of two appealing new stars, doesn't exactly fire the imagination anew."
Todd McCarthyThe Hollywood Reporter: "The Force is back. Big time. As the best Star Warsanything — film, TV show, video game, spinoff, what-have-you — in at least 32 years, Star Wars: The Force Awakens pumps new energy and life into a hallowed franchise in a way that both resurrects old pleasures and points in promising new directions… The franchise is indeed reawakened."
Jessica Derschowitz,Entertainment Weekly: "The Force Awakens delivers exactly what you want it to: rollicking adventure wrapped in epic mythology, a perfect amount of fan service that fires your geekiest synapses, and a just-right cliffhanger ending that paves the way for future installments… When The Force Awakens ends, it feels bittersweet simply because you so badly want to get to the next chapter.
A.A. DowdA.V. Club: "The Force Awakens borrows so much from the 1977 original — environments, relationship dynamics, action scenes, even a basic plot structure — that it often resembles a remake as much as a straight sequel. But for plenty of viewers, any misgivings about originality will go out the window the minute Han Solo and Chewbacca saunter back into theMillennium Falcon, or that rousing John Williams score rises over new images for the first time in a decade."
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian:"The Force Awakens is in touch with the force of action-adventure and fun. My only tiny reservation, which I will get out of the way now, is with a tiny new droid who has a bit of a Scrappy-Doo vibe about him."
Pete HammondDeadline: "J.J. Abrams has taken George Lucas' baby and reinvented it for true fans of the early films. They captured the heart, soul, wit, adventure, and wonder of what it is that makes Star Wars such a phenomenon in movie history… He brought back what was great and merged it with compelling and likable new characters who can carry it forward."
Alonso Duralde, TheWrap: "Abrams and company bring enough verve to the proceedings to create some wonderfully exciting moments alongside the reunions and the revelations. There are some slower bits, and an ending designed to leave you wanting more, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel a tingle in my neck at the familiar opening of Williams' score."
Russ Fischer, Indiewire: "Snazzily directed by J.J. Abrams with vibrant effects and a busy plot that sets the whole franchise in motion all over again, The Force Awakens delivers on expectations with a fun, polished space odyssey that embraces the appeal of the originals. The hype is strong with this one, but brace yourself: The Force Awakens does have flaws. It's a little hokey in parts and at times distractingly self-referential, but that itself speaks to the nature of the material."
Matt GoldbergCollider: "The Force Awakens is a success, although it falls short of greatness because it never fully embraces the new, exciting energy Abrams and his cast bring to the franchise."
Thus far, the reviews have largely been light side — the Rotten Tomatoes score as of this writing is staying on target at 97%!
